Happiness is Infectious!

Noticing people in the moment.

Yura Hello!

I had the privilege of attending the EKKA with my family on the weekend. The EKKA is the big show for Brisbane in which the country comes to the city, and there is a new temporary community formed in which we can take time to learn from each other about different animals, plants, foods, and so many other ways of being.

I know that this is my bias and how I see the event. I know that other people have a different view of the event based on their experience/bias and perspective, and this blog is not to challenge that.

I wanted to share the idea of infectious happiness with you in this blog. What I know about yesterday is that I had a brilliant day. I spent the entire day and night looking, talking, laughing, and learning, and I reflected and wanted to know WHAT was so incredible about the day.

This brought me to the idea of infectious happiness. As the literature states, happiness is infectious , when you choose to be happy and are connected directly and indirectly by happiness. Therefore yesterday, my mindset was wired for happiness as I was happy, and my family was happy as we were having a day together to share the EKKA experience, but it was more than that. I wanted to reflect on what I had noticed during the day. What I observed added to my happiness and led me to a peaceful moment of reflection on the community I was sitting with.

What did I see?

  • I saw a screaming child be distracted by the happy street performer and immediately stop screaming and start laughing.
  • I saw a tired family sit together, share a meal, and then many laughs while they listened to a performer sing an upbeat, happy song.
  • I saw chickens crow and be cared for beautifully.
  • I saw cats and dogs admired and loved.
  • I saw people enjoy food from all over the world.
  • I saw people from all different communities and parts of the world sit around a field and ohhh / ahhh and cheer on the many performers who put on a show, including exceptional fireworks.
  • I saw people helping each other to get out of a busy place at the night's end. Help the elderly get down difficult stairs, help people with prams and small children navigate to a train platform.

And then I realised the peace within me from noticing how great the world was at that moment.

It was an unexpected gift from a day I did not expect, and I had a tear in my eye and love in my heart. The EKKA helped me to feel like this, and I wonder for all of you:

What is the place that has unexpectedly allowed you to sit quietly for a moment and get infected by others' happiness?

I would love to hear about what moments give you happiness and peace.
